Rope Splicing Tools
Splicing Tools That Every Arborist Should Have
When it comes to splicing, there are a number of rope tools that every arborist should have. While many of these tools come from splicing techniques related to marine rope, they have their place in tree work as well. The tools needed for splicing are varied, each serving a different purpose.
Fids
There are a large number of different fids available, each with a specific purpose. Some are best suited to splice single braid ropes, while others are great for splicing double braid ropes. Fids used to splice double braid ropes come in sets of several diameters. Some fids are as simple as being large stainless steel needles, while others are tubed. When picking fids, is important to think about your most commonly used lines, and their rope constructions.
Toss Splicing Wand
A long, handled tube containing a spike and hidden snare. This is one of the most commonly used tools by professionals. It allows for easier splicing of braided rope, as well. It's a must have for any arborist.
Marlin Spike
A marlin spike, sometimes called a marline spike or marlinspike, is used for a variety of tasks. This includes unlaying rope, untying knots, and joining ropes together. It allows for more precise pulling of fibers, meaning that other parts of the rope remain undamaged.
